Maths

This half term, we have finished off our maths topic on fractions. We have looked at adding and subtracting mixed number fractions and simplifing fractions. We have now moved onto looking at long multplication and multplying two-digit by two-digit numbers.

We continued looking at long multiplication with bigger numbers such as three-digit and four-digit. We have also looked at short division and have recapped the formal method using the bus stop. We have used this to help our understanding of division and learn about remainders.

English

In English, we have started our new book, 'The Journey'. So far we have explored the shapes and colours that the illustrator has used and the emotions that they are trying to show through the use of those colours. We have created freeze frames to represent memories of the father and have created some art work of fond memories with have from different holidays and explored how colour can change the emotion in the pictures.

We have carried on our English story, by writing a diary entry about a journey through a forest until we meet a border wall. To help us with imagining what it might be like to go on this journey, we performed some dram and created freeze frames of differeent stages of the story. We have then written a letter to a guard to persuade him to allow us to cross.

Our story also has a strong female lead, the mother, and from this the children have completed an ode to a mother.

Science

In Science, we have started our new topic on forces. We have looked at what a force is and have learnt that it is a push or pull of an object. We have then discussed one of the forces on Earth, gravity and discovered that this is a pull towards the centre of an object. We have investigated the force of gravity by using newton metres. This involved taking accurate measurements and completing a fair test.

Following on from this, we have learnt about the force friction. We used the force meters again and worked with our partners to perform an investigation into which surface provided the most force against a shoe.

History

In our history topic, we have continued to expand our knowledge on the Anglo-Saxons. We have looked at Alfred the Great and how he created peace with the Vikings uniting the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons and creating Danelaw. We have also discussed the different achievements of his regin and which achievement we thought was the most important. This caused quite a discussion in class.

After learning about Alfred the Great, we have focused on the Anglo-Saxons and religion. We have learnt about why they converted to Christinanity and the different Saints around in the Anglo-Saxon times. We have also learnt about the Gosforth Cross and why this is such an important piece of architecture to show the beliefs back during the Anglo-Saxon times. We have also looked at Sutton Hoo and the artefacts discovered in the burial mounds.

Art

This half term, we are looking at abstarct art and will be creating a piece based on the work of Peter Thorne.
