Our Vision for Maths at St George's

‘Let all that you do be done in Love’ 1 Corinthians 16:14

The example of Jesus Christ and the Good news that he brings inspire St George’s school to be a place of hope and a caring and inclusive community in which we all love to learn and learn to love

‘The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics!’ Paul Hamos

Mathematics is an essential skill for everyday life and equips pupils with a powerful set of tools to understand, challenge and change the world. Mathematics involves the skills of logical thinking, reasoning, problem solving, pattern seeking and the ability to think in abstract ways. These skills are important in the world in which we live and for the future world of employment for our pupils. Mathematics is about discovery and finding solutions refining the process to achieve efficiency. Mathematics can present many different challenges for different people and the way we approach problems can be complex and varied yet our ability to persevere and grow resilience whist exploring maths is paramount.

Our six principles for the teaching of maths are:

  • Making sense of the world by making maths real and purposeful.
  • Exploring different methods to be efficient in problem solving.
  • Investigating maths in different ways to make links between concrete, pictorial and abstract.
  • Using checking strategies to find and learn from mistakes.
  • Understanding and using mathematical vocabulary to reason and solve problems.
  • Spotting patterns and making links when exploring numbers.
